Category 6 Cable

Is Category 6 Cable Right for Me?

Category 6 cable (Cat 6) is a multi use cable. It is designed for extremely high speed transfer of data. Cat 6 cable greatly reduces cross talk and interference. If you want to be ready for the future Cat 6 cable is the way to go.

Cat 6 is the standard for high speed connections that require Gigabit (1000 Mbps) Ethernet. This type of cable can transfer information at speeds more than twice that of Cat e 5. Cat 6 is rated to 200-250 MHz and is often used where super-fast broadband will be needed. This can be true for any type of business or educational environment that must transfer information quickly.

Like the previous types of copper standard cables, Cat 6 is made up of four pairs of twisted copper wire. This wire utilizes all inner wires. Cat 6 can be composed of 22, 23, or 24 gauge wire as long as the wire meets standards. Patch cables usually end with an 8P8C modular connector instead of the RJ-45 that has been widely used with previous wires.

Cat 6 cable can be bought on a roll or cut into individual lengths up to 330 feet (100 meters) with the 8P8C connector already installed at the ends. This type of cable comes in stranded or solid. Stranded cable is generally used where the cable needs to be flexible, whereas solid cable is better suited for longer lengths. You will find that this is much more suitable for your needs.
