Category 5 Cable

Is Category 5 Cable Right for Me?

Category 5 (Cat 5) cable is a multi-use cable. It is designed for greater integrity of the signal conducted through the cable. Computer networks, such as Ethernet, often use this structured cabling, but it can also be used to carry voice services and ATM services.

Cat 5 has been named the current industry standard for telephone wiring as well as network cabling. This type of cable is generally unshielded, but shielded versions are also made. Inside the outer covering of a Cat 5 cable are four pairs of twenty-four gauge copper wire. Each pair of copper wires are individually sheathed inside the outer covering. These pairs help to reduce interference in the line and shield against cross talk. Cat 5 cable can carry data at speeds of 100 mbps or more.

Cat 5 cable can be bought on a roll or cut into individual lengths up to 330 feet (100 meters) with the RJ-45 jacks already installed at the ends. This type of cable comes in stranded or solid. Stranded cable is generally used where the cable needs to be flexible, whereas solid cable is better suited for longer lengths. Straight-through, crossover, and roll-over pinouts are available. Different network devices will use different types of pinouts.

Plenum Cat 5 has a specially coated outer surface that meets fire codes. Plenum Cat 5 does not emit toxic fumes if it is burnt. This type of Cat 5 cable is usually a requirement if the cable will run through areas where toxic fumes could harm a person in the event of a fire.
